Why is there PTFE and Kynar long lead times

In the last year, the industry has had more shortages than I've come across during my 30 years experience. In the past I have seen sharp price increases, and I have observed several shortages, and delivery issues as a result of resin allocations from resin companies. This is the first time I have seen all these issues at one time.

Polytetraflouroethylene (TFE) and PVDF are both on allocation.

These two resins are in short supply. The  PTFE Sheeting product PTFE (TFE) and also Kynar  manufacturing requires a mineral called Fluorspar which is mined in Mongolia and China. The world interest in this mineral has increased significantly, as well as the supply has tightened. PTFE materials have high heat resistance, excellent chemical resistance and really low co-efficient of friction (slippery) and is utilised within dozens of purposes from non-stick fry cookware to ptfe tape for personal use. This particular mineral is the important raw material inside the manufacturing of fluoropolymers, fluorolubricants and quite a few refrigerants.This surge in demand coupled with shortage of raw materials has caused a dramatic price increase (almost double within the past year), shortages, and we expect both these factors to continue in the near future.
